What Is The Role Of Teacher In Education | JBCN International

Role Of Teacher In Education
Education has to change to keep pace with the changing times, therefore the role of the teacher in the classroom has to be given a serious thought. It is no longer about delivering content because the content is freely available to students with the advent of the internet; teachers will need to have a very different role to play. Preparation for this change needs to be about teaching the child to teach himself. Teachers themselves will need to get involved in the path of learning to learn, personalized learning, high-interest learning. The environment the teacher creates will be one-on-one where the teacher becomes a learning companion to the child and not an information-giver leading to set-question answers. The teacher creates the environment of creating problem-solving opportunities for the child; of whetting their curiosity to think through issues, to ask more questions than there are answers, to ponder and wonder, to dream, to observe, to think creatively, to propose multiple possibilities. This is the essence of learning.

Teachers need to include 21st century skills – Critical thinking, Collaboration, Communication and Creativity in their pedagogy but simultaneously work with learners on 22nd century skills. The pace of change will increase at an exponential rate and much of what is projected for the 22nd century will happen in the next 20 years. They need to create an environment where Care, Community, Connect, and Culture are values that young learners will imbibe. In order to build these values, we need to build a strong partnership between home and school; all the stakeholders on the same page as we collectively prepare the young adult ready for a world that will be volatile, uncertain ambiguous and complex; the VUCA World.

How does a teacher keep the natural curiosity How does a teacher keep the natural curiosity of a 4-year old child open throughout the schooling years? How does a teacher set in motion a free-thinker? How does a teacher get children to ask more questions and become their own seekers? How does a teacher keep pace with the knowledge and multiple perspectives the world of digital information gives at the stroke of a finger? How does a teacher stretch goals for their students to unlock their potential? How does a teacher create the dissonance within the child that sparks them to seek the answers for themselves? These are questions teachers need to ask themselves and teacher-training institutions must strive to give.

Since automation, technologically-enabled processes make it mandatory for teachers to also become experts in the use of software, artificial intelligence, computing skills, coding, almost needing to become software engineers in order to use these learning tools successfully. Teachers will require to reskill themselves and change the paradigm of what education is thought to be and become a learning companion with the student, putting aside the traditional teaching strategies that are roadblocks to discovery, setting free the natural life-force of seeking the new and reaching beyond one’s self.
