Best IB Subjects for Engineering

Choosing IB subjects for an engineering pathway is one of the decisions that matters most and gets thought about least. Most students know they need Physics and Maths. What they are less clear on is which level, which second science, and how the whole combination reads to a university admissions office.

The Non-Negotiables

If engineering is your goal, two subjects are effectively compulsory at Higher Level.

  • Mathematics AA HL: Cambridge, Imperial, ETH Zurich, NUS, and virtually every institution that matters for engineering expects this. AA SL is not sufficient for most competitive programmes. AI at either level is not considered equivalent by the vast majority of engineering programmes.
  • Physics HL: Engineering is applied physics. Every leading engineering programme globally expects Physics HL. There are no meaningful exceptions among competitive institutions.

The Third HL: Chemistry or Computer Science?

Beyond Maths AA HL and Physics HL, most competitive engineering applicants take a third rigorous subject.

  • Chemistry HL or SL is particularly relevant for Chemical, Materials, Environmental, and Biomedical Engineering. For more traditional engineering fields like mechanical or civil, Chemistry SL is a reasonable supporting subject.
  • Computer Science HL has become increasingly relevant as engineering programmes across all disciplines become more computational. A student with Physics HL, Maths AA HL, and Computer Science HL signals both scientific foundation and digital fluency. This reads especially well for Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering.

An Extended Essay in Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science addressing a genuine engineering question is a meaningful addition to an engineering application. What Competitive Universities Actually Require

  • University of Cambridge Engineering: Maths AA HL strongly preferred, plus Physics HL. Explicitly states Maths AI is not accepted.
  • Imperial College London Engineering: Maths and Physics at HL, typically 6 or 7. Chemistry is often listed as a preferred further subject.
  • ETH Zurich Engineering: Maths and Physics at HL with strong scores expected.
  • NUS Singapore Engineering: Maths HL and Physics HL. Competitive applicants typically present 38 or above overall.

Physics HL and Maths AA HL are fixed for engineering. The third HL depends on your specific engineering interest. Chemistry HL for chemical or biomedical engineering.
