Yes. But there are specific conditions you need to meet and knowing them early can save you from a costly mistake in Grade 12.

What NEET Requires

Every student applying to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, or veterinary medicine at any recognised institution in India must clear NEET UG. This applies regardless of which board you studied under.

IB Diploma students are eligible for NEET provided they meet the following:

• Subjects at Higher Level: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology must all be studied at HL. Standard Level does not satisfy eligibility criteria for most Indian medical colleges.
• Minimum marks: At least 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology combined (40% for SC/ST/OBC). In IB terms, this roughly translates to around 11 or higher across your three science subjects on the 7-point scale. Verify with your target institution directly.
• Age: At least 17 years old on or before 31 December of the admission year.
• AIU equivalence: The IB Diploma is recognised as equivalent to Class 12 by the Association of Indian Universities. You will need an AIU equivalence certificate when applying to medical colleges. Start this process early. It takes time.

The Real Challenge: The NEET Syllabus Gap

Eligibility is one thing. Cracking NEET is another.

NEET is based on the NCERT syllabus for Class 11 and 12. The IB curriculum covers many of the same concepts but in a different sequence and with different emphasis. IB Biology goes deep in areas NEET rewards. But IB Chemistry and Physics at HL may not cover every NEET topic the way NCERT frames it.

This means IB students typically need dedicated NEET coaching alongside their Diploma studies. Most students who succeed at both begin this supplementary preparation in Grade 11, not Grade 12. Waiting until after the May exams leaves almost no time before NEET, which is also held in May.

The Timing Problem

NEET happens in May. IB results come in July. You will sit NEET before your official IB results are available. You will need your school’s predicted grades and a bonafide certificate to register. Actual results are required at the time of counselling and admission.

AIIMS, JIPMER, and Private Colleges

Both AIIMS and JIPMER now use NEET scores. There are no separate entrance exams, so a competitive NEET score makes you eligible for these institutions subject to their individual cutoffs.

For private medical colleges and deemed universities, the AIU equivalence certificate is particularly important. Contact the admissions office of any college you are seriously considering and ask explicitly whether they have admitted IB students before and what documentation they required.

The IB Diploma does not close the door to medicine in India. But it requires more deliberate planning than CBSE or State Board. Subject selection matters. NEET preparation needs to start in Grade 11. And the AIU equivalence paperwork needs to be managed carefully.
