IB Maths AA vs AI: Which Course Should You Choose?

For many IB students, this is one of the most consequential subject choices in Grade 11. Get it right and Maths becomes an asset in your university application. Get it wrong and you could find yourself either struggling through content that does not serve your goals, or underselling yourself to universities that expected more.

The Basic Difference

The IB offers two Maths courses, each at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL):

  • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) focuses on mathematical theory, proof, and abstract thinking. It is the more traditional academic Maths course.
  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) focuses on applying mathematics to real-world contexts, statistical modelling, and the use of technology. It was introduced in 2019 and is still widely misunderstood.

Both are legitimate IB Maths courses. But they are designed for different learners with different goals, and choosing the wrong one has real consequences.

What Universities Require

This is where the choice gets most consequential.

  • Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics: AA HL is almost universally required or strongly preferred. Cambridge, Imperial, ETH Zurich, and most leading institutions explicitly state or strongly imply this. Some programmes at UCL and Edinburgh will not consider AI HL as equivalent.
  • Economics, Business, Finance: Many universities accept either at HL, but LSE, Warwick, and UCL look favourably on AA HL specifically because of its rigour in calculus and algebra.
  • Medicine, Biology, Environmental Science: AI SL or HL is often appropriate. These fields use statistics more than calculus. That said, AA SL at minimum keeps more options open.
  • Architecture, Design, Arts, Humanities: The Maths requirement is typically lowest. AI SL is generally acceptable.

The Four Combinations and What They Signal

  • AA HL: Signals strong mathematical ability and readiness for quantitative university study. Choose this if your field is mathematics intensive or if you want maximum optionality.
  • AA SL: Solid mathematical competence without the depth of HL. Appropriate when Maths is a supporting subject rather than a central one.
  • AI HL: Applied and statistical mathematics. Appropriate for environmental science, social research, and some economics programmes. Not appropriate for pure mathematics, physics, or most engineering at competitive universities.
  • AI SL: Foundation level. Suitable when Maths is a supporting requirement. Should not be chosen simply because it seems easiest. Universities can tell.

The Honest Conversation About Difficulty

AA HL is hard. It demands consistent effort and genuine interest in abstract mathematics. Students who choose it without the aptitude often find it drags everything else down.

AI HL is also harder than its reputation suggests. Students who choose it expecting an easy ride sometimes find the statistical complexity of the HL topics surprising.

The right question is not which Maths is easier. It is which Maths is right for where you are going and what you can genuinely sustain over two years.
